Testing.

Licking County Homeschoolers facilitates the required (unless it’s waived or you’re doing a portfolio review) end of the year testing at our facility.

Our Test Administrator is Melissa Hamilton. Melissa Hamilton is a certified Ohio teacher for grades 1-8. She holds a BS in Elementary Education from Pensacola Christian College, Pensacola, Florida as well as a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from  the University of West Florida, Pensacola, Florida.  She has also continued her education by continuing education classes from The Ohio State University and Ashland University to further develop her knowledge in reading difficulties/strategies, writing, science,  technologies, and elementary math best practices and strategies. She has taught in both public and private schools (10 years) as well as homeschooled her own children.  She has had experience with many curricula, both as a teacher and as a home educator.  She is open to all forms of homeschooling. She has administered testing for many years and has a very calm, cool demeanor sure to make your children comfortable in what would be an otherwise stressful situation.

Testing is this author’s preferred method. We like to know for sure that everything we strove for all year long is working and if it’s not we are better prepared to change course and focus more on the areas where the deficits may be the greatest. Once the scores are in you will receive a detailed summary of skill sets with grade equivalents and also how your student ranks with the national average.

Testing dates will be announced as the end of the year approaches.

How to Get Started.

Curriculum.

Just as with clothing, there are so many curricula out there you’ll never be able to try them all on. Here are some places to start. We encourage you to reach out to members of our group to ask opinions but keep in mind just like with clothing what looks good on one person may not be cut right for someone else.

https://cathyduffyreviews.com/# is a trusted source of reviews for homeschool curriculum.

https://www.thehomeschoolmom.com/ will help with answering so many of your questions from, “What style homeschooler am I?” to “How do I plan my day?”

Tried and True Curriculum

https://www.aop.com/ From workbooks that are student (LifePac) led to computer based with no internet and self grading (SOS), online academy (Monarch) or even teacher led (Horizons) Alpha Omega has something to offer everyone.

https://www.abeka.com/ Teach the kids yourself or sign up for video classes and let their teachers guide them in learning while you drink your coffee, breathe, and maybe even fold laundry. Abeka is an excellent curriculum and will certainly keep your children learning and striving.

https://www.bjupresshomeschool.com/content/home# BJU also has the choice between textbooks or video lessons either by the grade or by the subject. It is certainly a tried and true curriculum and we particularly enjoy the bright and colorful engagement sure to keep your child’s attention. Our local contact is cassandra.homeworks@gmail.com

https://www.apologia.com/ Science is a whole other ball game. One science curriculum that stands out in the homeschool curriculum in Apologia. It is thorough, intense, educational, and in a word, amazing.

Still curious?

These are just a few. Many families choose to attend a homeschool convention in order to meet these companies, look through material, ask questions and glean information.
